1,000 Houses Will Be Built in 2022; $30 Million CDB Loan Secured – Skerrit

Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has revealed his administration’s plans for 2022. His plans include initiating the construction of an international airport, constructing 1,000 new homes for Dominicans, and providing soft loans to businesses and individuals after the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) granted the country $30 million.

The prime minister said his government will continue the strings of construction activities it has initiated in 2021. He said the contract for the construction of the international airport in Wesley will be awarded and all related activities are in top gear. He said access roads to the airport are being constructed and all necessary testing are underway.

He added that 31 new homes are also being constructed in Wesley for the use of airport personnel and village residents.

The project is a key undertaking for this government and for the people of Dominica because the international airport has the potential to transform the economy of our country and place it on a progressive path to development for the benefit of current and future generations.

The national leader also revealed that 1,000 new houses will be built as part of the government’s plan to construct 5,000 resilient homes for needy citizens.

The DLP administration had begun the housing revolution in 2021 and hundreds of homes had already been given to people across the country. Skerrit said additional houses will be built in Cochrane, the Kalinago Territory, Castle Bruce, Colihaut, Paix Bouche, Roseau Valley, Roseau South, Woodford Hill, Eggleston, Soufriere, Scotts Head, Pointe Michel, Canefield, Grand Bay and Dubique among others.

The government also looks forward to strengthening health innovations across the island with necessary houses built as part of the healthcare revolution.

With new facilities set to open this month going into February in Newtown, Bagatelle, Penville, Anse de Mai, Soufriere and Colihaut, government continues to strengthen the primary health sector infrastructure. All of these health centres are complete and some of them are even occupied by the nurses and providing care to residents in those heath districts.

The prime minister also revealed that the government has secured a $30 million loan from CDB which will be loaned to businesses impacted by the COVID-19 pandemic. He said the first tranche of the fund has arrived the country and the rest will come before the end of the year. The loan will be administered by AID bank at an interest lower than 4% to beneficiaries.

We have finally finalized the thirty million dollars loan agreement with the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB) for unlending to micro, small and medium-sized enterprises (MSME) in Dominica. And I am pleased to report that these funds will be made accessible on very concessionary terms to our business owners whose operations we know have taken a hit from this pandemic.
