Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit says the ongoing Roseau River Defense Project will be completed by September. The $15 million river wall project is in progress at River Street and promises to be a spectacular national pride after completion, Skerrit said. The prime minister made this statement during a recent inspection tour of the construction with cabinent members.
Describing the river defense project as expansive, the prime minister it will add a lot of aesthetic beauty to Roseau when it is finished. Adding that rivers in public places pose security risks to people within that community, Skerrit said an expansive promenade will be built alongside the wall of the river.
“One can appreciate the importance of these river walls to the safety of lives and property, because we have the beauty of our river flowing to the city,” PM Skerrit said. “But that also brings certain risks and we are trying to mitigate against these risks.”
Explaining that the previous practice whereby people sold wares and goods along the river bridge was not sightly, the PM said roomy shops and an expansive promenade will be constructed to aid foot traffic and commerce.
You recall we had different shacks there over a period of time and clearly. These things are not sanitary. They are not places that we should be vending food and beverage. So the attention there is to build more aesthetically appealing shops and bars so the people could vend from this much-improved facilities.

The completed river wall, promenade, beautify shops and other commercial facilities and beautification projects along river bank will give lots of economic and political importance to Roseau. The city will thrive as an economic hub for business activities, and the value of property in the city will go up for higher returns to owners.
PM Skerrit was accompanied on the tour by Tourism Minister Joseph Isaac, and Dominica Labour Party (DLP) contender for Roseau Central, Melissa Skerrit. The DLP candidate expressed delights at the soon-to-be-completed river wall, saying Roseau will be perfected enhanced after the project.
Melissa Skerrit said the river wall will be a spectacle at completion, and it will give pride to people in Roseau Central. She added that the promenade and other facilities for the project will bring people of various cultures together in Roseau, creating a fusion of cultural resilience and tolerance.
