16 Persons Receive Sisserous, Meritorous, and Medal of Honour Awards
Ambassador Mathew Walter among 15 other notable Dominicans received national awards for their contribution to national development. The awards are part of the features slated for Dominica’s 41st independence anniversary. Apart from the fact that Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit delivered the independence speech, President Charles Savarin took the official salutation during the Parade of Uniformed Troops at the Windsor Sports Park Stadium.
Mathew Walter is the Dominican ambassador to Cuba. He along with two other nominees was given the Sisserou Award of Honour – the second-highest national award in Dominica. Walter was given the award in recognition of his contribution to education and politics. A former school principal and parliamentary representative for Paix Bouche, he also held several ministerial portfolios for the Agriculture and Fisheries and Community Development, and Gender Affairs and Information ministries.
The Dominica Broadcasting Corporation (DBC Radio) together with the Antigua and Barbuda Broadcasting Services also received the Sisserou Award of Honour for quality broadcasting. Here is the breakdown of the awards:
The Sisserou Award of Honour was given to –
- Ambassador Mathew Walter for contribution to education and politics
- The Dominica Broadcasting Corporation (DBC Radio) for quality broadcasting
- The Antigua and Barbuda Broadcasting Services for quality broadcasting
The Meritorious Service award was presented to –
- Samuel Raphael for tourism and business
- Hamilton Joseph for community service
- Rev. David Serrant for evangelism
- Fr. Franklyn Cuffy for evangelism
- Dr. Jennifer Elwin for medicine
- John Riviere for business
- Shane Marshall for sports
The Services Medal of Honour was awarded to –
- Vilna Royer for education
- Steven Dangleben for broadcasting and entertainment
- Peterson Sabroache for health
The Long Service medal was presented to –
- Nellie Fabien-Joseph for education
- Starry Williams for education
- Missie Lander for Health
The annual awards are given to deserving Dominicans who have distinguished themselves in personal pursuits and in the service of the country. This year’s awards were given during the country’s anniversary of independence which was tagged “Saluting Resilience and Rejuvenation: Two Years On”.
