The Minister of Health, Dr. Irving McIntyre, has given an update on the current COVID-19 situation in Dominica. According to him, the 16th positive case of coronavirus has been confirmed on the island, and the first individual who contracted the disease has been discharged from hospital after his cure. He also added that four other quarantined persons who have been in isolation for 14 days and tested negative twice will also be discharged in a couple days.
With 309 coronavirus tests already done in Dominica, McIntyre said Dominica has the second highest infection cases in the region after Cayman Islands.
For the latest infection case, the health minister said people who had contact with him are being traced at the moment to be tested. “We got a new positive today and as we speak, we have our health teams tracing and contacting all the persons associated with that new case,” he said.
National epidemiologist Dr. Shalauddin Ahmed confirmed that the individual discharged was the first index case who tested negative twice within 24 hours based on the World Health Organisation protocols. He also verified that four others will be discharged from the St. James facility in Portsmouth after their second test comes out negative by tomorrow.
The Ministry of Health on April 8 revealed that worldwide, there have been 1,501,947 positive cases of coronavirus, recovered cases put at 319,214, and 87,830 deaths. But in Dominica, the statistics is that there have been 16 positive cases, 309 tests conducted, 5 recovered persons, 295 negative results, and 315 in self-isolation.
