18 DSC Students Present Economic Research Papers That Drive National Growth

Eighteen students of the Dominica State College presented papers that have been hailed as capable of driving economic development in the country. The papers were presented during a two-day conference tagged Scholarship and Creative Achievement Conference and organized by the Department of Economics on May 25-26.

An economics lecturer, Ashma McDougall, said the papers presented by the students entail economic research methods that are designed for graduate researchers at the associate level. She said the papers underscore the necessity of higher educational research for national development. She noted that knowledge applied for developmental service is crucial for economic growth.

According to McDougall, the research presentations are geared towards exploring new academic insights, analyzing market insights, and developing economic perspectives that would aid future applications. She noted that panel discussions followed each paper presentation and elite scholars from within and outside the country participated in the discussions.

“This conference celebrates students’ excellence in regional scholarship, learning beyond the classroom and over the next two days, you will be exposed to a thought-provoking lineup of papers and speakers,” McDougall disclosed at the commencement of the conference. “Their presentation represents diversity with the economic discipline; more importantly, their work foreshadows even greater achievement that will come from these scholars and artists for years to come.”

Some of the research topics covered by the students include Median Voter Theory, Analysis of Tuition-free Policy, Male Enrolment in Voting Situations, Gambling Addiction Among Youths, MSMEs and Growth within Dominica, Haitian Migration and the Dependency Syndrome and Culture of Dependence.

DSC President, Dr. Donald Peters, praised the graduate economics students for their research, noting that Dominica needs applicable research methods now more than ever. He said the works of the students will form the basis of future measurements and analysis for informed economic decisions.
