$181,000 Lighting for Newtown Field & 1,000-Feet Road Project for Giraudel
The MP for Roseau South Constituency, Chekira Lockhart-Hypolite, has revealed that $181,000 has been expended for lighting up the football field in Newtown. The parl-rep said the Newtown community requested to have the field rehabilitation done after due consultations, and that this development will herald the revival of the off-season football league for which Newtown is known.
Lockhart-Hypolite said the Newtown football field was damaged by Hurricane Maria in 2017 and that wooden poles were erected to light up the field after the event. But the lighting was poor and residents could not use the field in the evenings, hence the need to rework the lighting with six steel poles. She said that Harlem football club and everyone in Newtown will enjoy quality football practice at the field with the new perimeter lighting.
The cost of this project is $181,000 and I really want to thank the Honourable Prime Minister for adhering to my request and making the funds available so that we could light up the Mecca of football in Dominica.

Lockhart-Hypolite, who also doubles as the Minister of State for Public Works, announced last week that more than 1,000 feet of road is being reconstructed in the St. Elmo area of Giraudel. She said that proper drainage will also be done on the road, and that it will be concretized instead of using asphalt. The area is part of the Flower Site Estate and the road rehabilitation is a top demand among Giraudel residents, she said.
I have met with the residents and also with the local village council and they said to me that this road is a priority project for them. It’s something that I wanted to do in my last term but due to covid-19 and the constraints that we had, I was unable to tackle the road, but now as I am the Minister of State in the Ministry of Public Works I found it necessary to ensure that we do the road for the people.
Hon. Chekira Lockhart-Hypolite, MP for Roseau South Constituency
The road project is a collaborative effort between the Ministry of Public Works which already graded the road, and the Giraudel Village Council and the parl-rep herself. She said that once the road is completed satisfactorily, it will serve as a model road construction for others in various hamlets within the constituency and that this will facilitate commuting for various purposes across the communities.
Furthermore on construction, PM Roosevelt Skerrit announced recently that more than 40 new homes will be built for residents of Grandbay and Dubique. He said that former Grandbay and Dubique residents who were displaced by Tropical Storm Erika will enjoy newer homes that are reinforced against natural elements. The homes have two or three bedrooms each.
While 24 news homes were constructed in Grandbay and 10 others renovated by the government, Skerrit said there are vacant land that could be developed and the homes sold to residents or that the land sold to them for personal construction. He added that a community centre and a magistrate court will be constructed close to the police station to serve the people.
