210 Homes Approved For Construction, Recipients to Choose From 45 Contractors
The government of Dominica has approved the construction of 210 climate-resilient houses under the World Bank Housing Recovery Project (HRP). According to Housing Minister Reginald Austrie, beneficiaries of the houses will be allowed to choose the building contractor they desire to construct their houses.
About 45 local contractors will be shortlisted for the project, and potential homeowners can select their desired contractor for the house construction.
A design firm has been hired to design the houses to be constructed and the firm will soon be submitting its designs for approval. As soon as that is done, beneficiaries will be contacted to choose their desired builder for the construction, Austrie stated.
“Planning approval for designs are being submitted by the design firm hired to complete this process and beneficiaries will participate in the selection of their contractors to engage the work under their behalf,” he said. “So we have certified these contractors, we will present those names to the homeowners, the beneficiary, and you will have the opportunity to decide who you want to construct your homes for you.”
The minister of housing revealed that the HRP scheme is aimed at replacing houses destroyed by hurricanes with newer and resilient houses across the length and breadth of Dominica.
Meanwhile, PM Roosevelt Skerrit has responded to public criticisms about the government’s current housing revolution. Following the handing over of 30 houses in Bellevue Rawle, the prime minister said the houses are the best Christmas gifts that could be given to anyone in the country.
The houses were constructed by MMCE and will provide accommodation to about 103 people, Skerrit said. He condemned those who blame the government for providing houses to poor Dominicans, saying it is the duty of the government to cater for the citizens.
