$27 Million Roseau and Marigot Fisheries Rehabilitation Nearing Completion

The Roseau and Marigot fisheries complexes – which are currently undergoing rehabilitation – are nearing completion. The fisheries were damaged by Hurricane Maria in 2017, and their restoration is funded by the Japanese government to the tune of EC$27 million.

The rehabilitation efforts cover restoring and rebuilding buildings, and purchasing fish storage equipment. When the project is complete, it is expected to boost the fishing sector and improve national revenue within the agriculture industry.

According to the Minister for Food Security, Fidel Grant, some of the works to be done at the Roseau fisheries include constructing buildings for fish processing, storage, ice-making, vending area, data processing, and other major improvements. The minister who visited the fishery with a team of government delegation checked on the progress being made and obtained a timeline for completing the project.

Grant also got assurances that the Marigot fisheries will be completed by August. Part of the ongoing work at the facility include water-proofing the buildings, constructing lockers for fishermen, and setting up breakwater concrete.

A Minister of State at the Ministry of Blue and Green Economy, Gregory Riviere, said the Roseau and Marigot fisheries will be of international standards when they are completed. He said a fish mill will also be constructed at the Marigot facility to aid fish farmers in growing healthy fish for national consumption.

It is also expected that completing both fisheries will lower the price of fish and seafood in Dominica and possibly enable the government to export fish to regional markets.
