4,000 People in Eastern Caribbean to Gain from Climate Resilience Project

Four thousand people in Eastern Caribbean, including Dominica, are to gain from climate resilience project. The initiative is aimed at enhancing local resilience in areas of the Eastern Caribbean where extreme natural weathers occur to cause damage to lives and property. The project is put together by the Caribbean Natural Resources Institute (CANARI) as part of the celebrations for the International Day for Disaster Risk Reduction.

The project will be carried out in Dominica, Antigua and Barbuda, and Grenada among other countries in the region. In recent times, extreme hurricane occurred in these countries, qualifying them for the project – Grenada witnessed Hurricane Ivan in 2004, Antigua and Barbuda had Hurricane Irma in 2017 and Dominica had Maria in 2017.

The project is tagged “Civil society-led solutions for community-based and ecosystem-based disaster risk reduction and resilience in the Eastern Caribbean”.

CANARI revealed that the initiative will be carried out in partnership with six non-governmental organizations (NGOs) in the region. This project partnership between community stakeholders in the targeted countries will enhance technical capacity and strengthen organizational coordination of the project objectives at delivering integrated Eco-Disaster Risk Reduction (Eco-DRR) and Community-Based Disaster Risk Reduction (CBDRR) solutions.

The programme will deliver climate resilience enablement to people and governmental structures in these countries so as to reduce the effects of extreme natural events when they occur. About 4,000 people resident in high-risk communities, with half of them being women, will benefit from the initiative. The National Disaster Offices and CSOs working in disaster risk management in the region will also be recipient of the benefits of the project.

The Inter-American Foundation (IAF) funded the project and its implementation will run from 2019 to 2022.
