About 50 farming trainees were given a Palintest Water Analysis Test Kit and a soil analyzer kit after completing agricultural training at the UWI St. Augustine Open Campus. The training was organized by a senior soil analyst at UWI, Dr. Gaius Eudoxie, in collaboration with the Ministry of Agriculture, and it ran from April 23-27, 2023.
During the graduation ceremony which held at the open campus facility, the permanent secretary in the Ministry of Agriculture, Reginald Severin, credited the training participants for their resilience and urged them to implement the skills they acquired at the centre. He said the government is ready to assist aspiring and established farmers with relevant trainings and skills for success in agriculture.
Severin underscored the importance of water and soil testing before farming or fishing purposes. He said the capacity of soil to give good yields is connected with the potential of marine ecosystems to sustain fish cultivation. He encouraged the participants to utilize their skills to boost food production in Dominica and for regional markets.
In a related development, a team of Cuban agriculturists visited Dominica to discuss agricultural advancement in the country. The group came to the Island under the auspices of the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO) in bilateral cooperation with the DLP administration to boost food productivity in both Cuba and Dominica.
Severin told the visitors that on behalf of the agriculture ministry, the government is ready to partner with Cuba to explore agricultural systems that would guarantee improved crop yield and food security across both countries. He said the government is willing to explore technological and scientific innovations to boost food security across the Caribbean.
