$500k to Upgrade Morne Prosper Primary School; $1.2m for Community High School
A sum of $548,246 has been awarded to rehabilitate the Morne Prosper Primary School and the adjoining sports facility. Another sum of $1.2 million is also assigned to upgrade the Dominica Community High School and the major structures within the school.
The contract for upgrading Morne Prosper Primary School was funded by the Basic Needs Trust Fund (BNTF) with the support of the Caribbean Development Bank (CDB), and the same entity also funded the remodelling of the Dominica Community High School.
According to Dr. Irving McIntyre, the parliamentary representative for Roseau Valley, the rehabilitation of the primary school will include the building of a security house at the entrance of the school, and the fencing of the football field to separate it from the school facility.
“The entire fencing of the compound provides safety for our teachers and our students as well, which is of prime importance,” Dr. McIntyre stated. “So if we have our sporting complex right on our academic structure, that makes a very comprehensive approach to developing a unified and a proper individual.”
McIntyre emphasized that education and sporting activities go together since they are complementary to the overall development of an individual. He added that sporting facility will be lighted for use in the nights so that players can use it at any time of the day. With the use of the recreational facility, further economic development will begin to occur in Morne Prosper village as well, he said.
In the same vein, Mathew Carrette of BNTF noted that some of the works to be done at the Dominica Community High School include the construction of a two-floor concrete to the school building, installation of solar power, a timber walkway, drainage system, addition of external ramp and staircase to the first floor.
Minister for Sports and Community Development, Roslyn Paul, commended the project and said the upgrades will provide a conducive learning atmosphere for students and teachers and equally provide more space to house teaching equipment and aids.
“The new resource room, the auditorium and computer lab and library will facilitate special training sessions for the students as well as the parents and I would think the wider community,” she stated.
