60 Students Graduate from DGS and 26 Pupils from Social Centre Preschool

Sixty students of Dominica Grammar School (DGS) graduated from the school within the week; and 26 pupils of the Social Centre Model Preschool also passed into primary school. The graduation ceremony for DGS held at the Goodwill Parish Hall where Kenny Edwards and Casia Cardette were recognized as valedictorians, and Yan Gregoire recognized as the salutatorian.

Kenny, who also emerged as the Student of the Year, is the son of the Parliamentary Secretary at the Ministry of Health, Kent Edwards. In his speech, Kenny said the five years his set used at DGS was not easy, and of note was the year 2021 when the COVID-19 pandemic struck.

“We began online learning and these were very tough times,” Edwards said. “We had to deal with no internet access, connectivity issues, poorly working devices, no devices, shared devices, technological issues, inability to focus on screens for long periods, distractions at home, and isolation.”

He urged his graduating classmates to remain strong as they forge ahead to what lies ahead in their academic pursuits.

Casia in her remarks urged her mates to be resilient and clear-headed as they strive for the next stage of their lives. She encouraged them to lose their fears and to not be distracted by mistakes and failures, adding these are all essential elements of overall success. “The biggest hindrance to success in this life is to strive for perfection,” she said. “Go out and try new things, and don’t be afraid to make mistakes; because it’s only then you’ll find the path that you are truly meant to be on.”

Reigning Calypso monarch, Tasha Peltier (Tasha P) in her speech to the 26 pupils who graduated from the Social Centre Model Preschool said she also finished from the preschool, and that what she learnt t the preschool prepared her for the future she has today. She tasked the pupils to look straight ahead and lift their heads high as they go on to primary school, saying it is the next stage for academic excellence in their lives.
