68 Families Get New Homes in “A Promise Made and A Promise Kept” Ceremony

Sixty-eight families received new homes in “a promise made and a promise kept” ceremony this past weekend. One of the new homeowners, Alina Pierre, revealed in an emotional speech that “this apartment is more than just a roof for me and my children…this represents my independence as a young woman. It is a place of safety and comfort for my children. It is a promise made and a promise kept. This apartment is truly a blessing”.

The new resilient homes were given to lucky families in the Cottage Constituency of Cotton Hill. The ceremony was attended by PM Roosevelt Skerrit, President Charles Savarin, MMCE Project Director Christopher Timmins, Town Council leader Antonia Pierre, Minister for Housing and Urban Development and Parliamentary Representative for Cottage Constituency Reginald Austrie, and cabinet officials among others.

Town Council leader Pierre rejoiced with the new homeowners, saying their socio-economic levels have been elevated with the new homes. She expressed joy that constructing the new houses in Cottage constituency has transformed the area into a thriving community with a new social life.

New Minister Austrie said the government is committed to ensuring that everyone gets a decent home to live in since “the philosophy of this government is that every man is born equal…” He also encouraged the new homeowners to take care of their new houses and care for their immediate environments.

PM Skerrit who personally handed the certificates to the two-bedroom unit apartments told the recipients that the project was funded with the CBI programme, adding that the fund had been deployed in carrying out lots of developmental projects across the country since Erika and Maria struck. He added that his mandate under the DLP administration is to provide 5,000 resilient homes to various families free of charge across the island.
