7-Year-Old Adaiah Sanford Wins Caribbean Literary Works Competition
Seven-year-old Adaiah Sanford has won the maiden edition of the Caribbean Literary Works Competition. She will be awarded an international publishing contract, a USD$5,000 advance payment, and royalties from sold copies of her book.
The literary competition was organized by The Ducreay Foundation and sponsored by Reycraft Books, Chattel House, and the China Silk Road Youth Forum. The competition will hold every year and this maiden edition was tagged “The Power of Representation”.
Sanford won the first place in the competition with a children’s book titled “The Legend of the Spirit Serpent” targeted at children aged 4-8. A Kalinago native, Sanford’s book is her first written piece and it serves as a beginner’s guide to the Kalinago language.
Five unpublished authors from different Caribbean countries made it to the final lap of the competition. Sanford emerged first; Karllen Lawrence, another Dominican from Grand Bay, emerged in the second place; and Robertha Reid, from Barbados, won the third position. Lawrence’s book is titled “Caribbean ABC”, a travel piece that covers the natural beauty and tourism potentials of the Caribbean in an alphabetical order.
Lawrence will receive a cash gift of USD$2,000, free editorial review of her works, as well as full mentorship from Reycraft Books. Reid on the other hand will receive free editorial book review and mentorship from Reycraft Books.
In the same vein, Tana Tahira Valmond, the deputy head girl at the Dominica Grammar School, has earned a special mention at the just concluded Kids World Travel Guide Essay Competition 2020 held in South Africa.
