854 Students to Sit For G6NA Exam across 70 Centres on June 23-24

A total of 854 Dominican students will be seating for the Grade Six National Assessment (G6NA) examination on June 23-24 across 70 centres. The number is broken down to 437 boys and 417 girls – with Roseau having the highest number of students sitting for the exam.

The examination was initially fixed for May 26-27 but postponed to June 23-24 due to the academic disruption occasioned by the COVID-19 pandemic. The Measurement Officer at the Curriculum Unit of the Ministry of Education, Candia Robinson, said the postponement would have enabled the students to prepare further for the examination.

Robinson said that while most of the subjects will be done on paper, Social Science will be done online. She said Social Studies will have 50 questions and Mathematics and Language Arts which will be done on paper will have 60 questions each. She said Science could also have been taken online, but this was advised against due to the many diagrams and illustrations in Science subject.

The Measurement Officer explained that the G6NA examination usually held in one day, but the authorities had to extend it to two days this year to reduce the stress students will be exposed. She added that safety and health protocols will be adhered to in terms of social distancing, washing of hands, and the use of face masks. She noted that if any student is down with COVID-19 pandemic, education officials will take the examination papers to the home of the student.

“If a child is infected with COVID and we aware of the situation…we are going to be working with the local registrar for CXC who is going to use some of her invigilators – because they have some experience in that – and they will go to the student’s homes with all the necessary precautions taking place, and the assessment will be administered at the child’s home,” she said.
