A New Dawn for Roseau: Towards Becoming the Caribbean’s Most Modern City

Melissa Poponne-Skerrit, the Parliamentary Representative for Roseau Central Constituency, has shared exciting details about the upcoming Roseau Enhancement Project. Scheduled to commence later this year, this ambitious initiative aims to elevate Roseau to the status of the most modern city in the Caribbean. The project, fueled by a US$41 million loan from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia approved by Parliament in November 2023, seeks to overhaul the city’s infrastructure.

The Roseau Enhancement Project plans to modernize the urban landscape through a series of comprehensive improvements. These include the renovation of roadways and bridges, the construction of pedestrian-friendly walkways, and the upgrade of the city’s lighting infrastructure to create a safer, more accessible urban environment.

Despite facing challenges, particularly with modernizing utility infrastructures like transitioning wires to underground cables, Poponne-Skerrit is optimistic. She acknowledges these hurdles but assures that strategies are in place to navigate these challenges effectively, promising visible progress within the year.

The initiative will kick off with the transformation of Great George Street. Plans for this area include enhancing sidewalks, covering drains for safety, burying utility wires for an uncluttered skyline, widening roads, ensuring wheelchair accessibility, and increasing parking spaces. This phase will not only improve functionality but also significantly enhance the aesthetic appeal of the city.

In addition to infrastructural improvements, the project includes a “paint the town” initiative aimed at revitalizing the appearance of both commercial and residential buildings. This beautification effort, coupled with the installation of new signage and street signs, is expected to uplift the city’s overall ambiance dramatically.

With these enhancements, Roseau is on the path to becoming a beacon of modernity in the Caribbean, reflecting a commitment to sustainable urban development and improved quality of life for its residents.
