A new political party, the Alternative Peoples’ Party (APP), may launch soon in Dominica. According to the party’s agenda, they are in the process of applying for registration with the Electoral Commission and may launch in the month of May if the registration goes according to plan. Insiders said the new party which describes itself as centrist may be based in Portsmouth.
“The Alternative Peoples’ Party (APP) is a political movement which is founded on the principle of coexistence, democracy and justice,” the party wrote on its official Facebook page. “We seek greater involvement of youth and women in electoral politics on the island of Dominica, and among Dominicans in the diaspora. APP aims to unite Dominicans under one common goal – prosperity for all irrespective of party affiliations, spiritual beliefs and financial circumstances.”
Established in December 2019, the executives of the new party remain largely unknown. Perhaps the party leaders are waiting to complete official registrations with the Electoral Commission and hold its first proposed Summer Youth Engagement and National Convention before revealing themselves. However, an informant disclosed under condition of anonymity that political observer Alex Bruno is part of the team.
When contacted, Bruno who is sympathetic with the United Workers Party (UWP), would not confirm nor deny his involvement with the new APP. He however stated that he is willing to side with any party that has the interest of the people at heart, and that the ruling Dominica Labour Party (DLP) has overstayed in government.
“If there is a meaningful and well-intended political movement which focuses on the overall good of our youth – today’s leaders – women and the wider citizenry of the nature isles, I will – without hesitation – be involved. I will also offer my expertise, represent, support and be identified with such a movement because this is exactly what the people need now.”
Bruno went on to disclose that the UWP is the only vibrant opposition party on the island, and there is the need for an opposition coalition with other parties to get the DLP out of power.
“I believe that the nation is ready for the resetting of the electoral political clock because, quite frankly, the incumbent party in the governing apparatus has overstayed and the decadence which has befallen the system is very apparent,” he stated.
