About $70 Million More Needed to Complete Geothermal Plant – Vince Henderson
The Minister for Energy, Vince Henderson, has revealed that between $60 million and $70 million more are needed to complete the geothermal plant being constructed Laudat. Henderson said the DLP administration has expended more than $20 million already on the project and that another $2.5 million was spent to repair the Laudat road to facilitate movement of raw materials for construction purposes.
Henderson said the geothermal plant construction is going according to plan and that it is projected to generate more than 15MW of power when completed. This amount of power is projected to power the entire island of Dominica and to possibly supplement the national grid.
He added that the contractors are constructing a re-injection well where all waste materials will be recycled into the system to eliminate environmental damage. He also disclosed that more power lines will be installed to transport power from the geothermal plant in Laudat to Fond Cole from where it will be distributed to local consumers.
The minister said the Skerrit-led administration is determined to make Dominica the first country in the world that is fully powered by renewable energy, and that is fully climate-resilient by 2030. He said the renewable energy will not only be used to power households, but it will also power industrial facilities and other major installations across the country.
