Agri-Expo: Food Import Bill and Foreign Exchange Examined in Guyana – Skerrit
Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit has applauded the success of the recently concluded agriculture exposition that held in Guyana two weeks ago. He said the symposium examined the opportunities and challenges within the agricultural sector in East Caribbean. The Dominican leader noted that part of the issues examined at the symposium include the food import bill and the impact of foreign exchange.
Skerrit revealed that the Agri-Investment Forum, which was attended by regional heads of government, comprehensively analyzed how food security could be guaranteed in the Caribbean. The conference noted that reducing the food import bill and addressing foreign exchange challenges would go a long way at boosting food security. They also identified finance and transportation as some of the challenges that must be overcome to guarantee food surplus.
According to the DLP leader, Dominica will be hosting one of the future regional conferences aimed at eliminating challenges in the food market; while Trinidad and Tobago has accepted to manage the air and marine transportation industry to aid food abundance in East Caribbean.
Skerrit also said his administration will be equipping local farmers with modern equipment and scientific trainings that will increase their food productivity in 2022. He added that access roads will be constructed and fertilizer will be supplied to enable farmers achieve their farming objectives as well as to penetrate the regional market for higher gains and product visibility.
