Al Jazeera Video: Linton Calls For Police Investigations, Others Condemn DLP

Opposition leader Lennox Linton has called for independent police investigations into the Al Jazeera video documentary alleging the sales of diplomatic passports in the country. The video indicts former and present UWP and DLP leaders involved in the sale of diplomatic appointments in return for large campaign funding. Both political parties have denied their involvement in the allegations, with a cross-section of Dominicans suggesting that the DLP engaged in such activity.

Political scientist Alex Bruno said the video documentary is a “shameful expose” on the current government, and that it indicts Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit in a grand scheme to perpetuate himself in office. He insisted there is no way the prime minister can absolve himself from the issues raised in the documentary, and that Skerrit is a time-bomb waiting to explode on the country.

Justice Dr. Irving Andre on a radio programme also condemned Skerrit for the Al Jazeera footage, saying the DLP is now exposed on how they raise money for their political campaigns. Andre said the reputation of Dominica is now soiled on account of the video which has gone viral globally, and that the international community will now regard Dominica as a corrupt Caribbean country.

Dr. Thomson Fontaine questioned the use to which the CBI funds coming into the country are put. According to him, CBI funds are seemingly used to promote government activities and facilitate winning the coming general elections for the DLP. He said it is bad that the Skerrit-led government can do underhand deals that undermine the integrity of Dominica and Dominicans.

Fontaine said he has faith that Linton cannot be involved in the sales of diplomatic passports since his tough stand on corruption is well-known. He said the Marigot constituency representative has always been in the forefront of justice and fairness and does not tolerate indiscipline or corruption. Fontaine said that he has documents which indicate that the DLP has been dealing in the sales of diplomatic appointments for people of questionable character in exchange for campaign funding as exposed by Aljazeera.
