Alex Alexander Charged With Murder of Girlfriend Velma Valmond

Alex Alexander, of Mahaut, has been charged with the murder of Velma Valmond, 35, a trainee doctor whose death occurred on December 30, 2022. Alexander, 32, is also charged with attempting to murder Valmond’s daughter, 18-year-old Daisy Earlean Durand.

Police Inspector Fixton Henderson told Judge Michael Laudat of the Magistrate Court that police officers responded to a report of domestic violence between Alexander and Valmond in the evening of her death. He said officers got to their house at No. 4, Jewels Lane, Goodwill, to find the lifeless body of Valmond in her bathroom, with a deep cut across her throat.

He said officers also found Alexander in the bathroom, unconscious and foaming from his mouth. Daisy also had injuries reportedly inflicted upon her by her mum’s live-in boyfriend. Valmond was pronounced dead at the scene and both Alexander and Daisy were taken to the DCFH where they were treated.

Being an indictable offence, Alexander’s case might be heard by a High Court judge and jury. He remains incarcerated at the Dominica State Prison and his case adjourned to June 16. He is represented by attorney Geoffrey Letang.

Meanwhile, Darlton Michael Joseph of Yam Piece has been charged with four firearm offences and a battery charge. Joseph told Judge Michael Laudat that he was not guilty of the charges when he appeared before the magistrate on February 2.

Police Inspector Frank Laville told the court that Joseph on November 20, 2022, at Stock Farm, did beat one Mathew Nicholas and aimed to assault him with a Chrome 9mm pistol. The defendant was charged with owning an illegal firearm, purposing to use it to endanger life, and actually discharging the firearm in a public place on the said date.

Representing the accused, attorney Wayne Norde argued that his client was eligible for bail based on facts that the allegation occurred last year, the firearm in question was never recovered, and only one individual accused the defendant of wrongdoing. Judge Laudat said granting application was at the discretion of the court and set the hearing for February 3, while remanding the accused in prison custody.
