UWP Senator Annette Sanford and Salisbury MP Hector John have condemned the Christmas promenade concert that held recently where people gathered enmasse to celebrate the festive season. Sanford and John said the mass gathering would endanger the health of the people given the dangers of COVID-19 in the country.
According to Sanford, the Ministry of Health established safety and health protocols to protect the wellbeing of the populace against the risks of coronavirus. She said it is unthinkable that a section of the people adhere to safety guidelines while another section flouts health protocols to the detriment of the entire nation.
“They broke their own rules; they made these rules and went ahead and broke it,” Sanford said. “I think this whole situation was a deliberate attempt to put people at risk. And that is what has happened in Barbados; they put their guards down, everything was okay…their cases were low, so they walked around without masks, and mixed around town as if everything was back to normal. And so right now, they are in a situation again where they have to do things to get themselves back to where they would be…there economy is worse off now because of their careless actions.”
MP John expresed concerns over the ability of the police to stop the mass gathering of people as was witnessed with the promenade concert in order to curtail the spread of COVID-19. He said the activity was a flagrant violation of COVID-19 guidelines and health protocols and that such violation should be taken seriously in the future.
“It was a serious breach of the protocols set by the Ministry of Health and it was broken by a member of parliament who took part in the promenade activities,” John disclosed. “We see what happened and know it has opened the door for Dominicans to engage in activities without recognizing these protocols. How is the police going to stop activities like these when they were helpless when the promenade concert was ongoing?”
