Anette Sanford Announces NGO; $10,000 for Bamboo Reforestation of Kalinago
Senator Annette Sanford has announced that the central focus of her Kibe’kuati NGO is to train Kalinago youths in journalism. She said trained youths will be able to investigate news events, write publishable news materials, and engage in other journalism activities that will make them professionals at their new craft.
The UWP senator said a news website focusing on the Kalinago Territory will be developed to enable trained journalists publish their stories for public consumption. They will also be able to edit or format their newstories in the acceptable format for effective journalism.
Sanford equally revealed that she got a $10,000 USD funding from UNDP for bamboo reforestation of the Kalinago region. This initiative will also include training for women to learn how to weave bamboo baskets and other craft for local sales and regional export.
The project will empower Kalinago women to be self-sufficient to the point of generating their own incomes. It will also bring economic empowerment to the region by attracting people who want to learn the craft from other regions to the territory. Bamboo will be replanted for future regeneration and revenue purposes while people will be able to access it for skill acquisition purposes.
