Any attack on CBI is an attack on every single Dominican, Prime Minister Skerrit said in Mahaut. The DLP leader made this assertion while endorsing the candidacy of Rayburn Blackmoore as MP for Mahaut. He said the opposition has been working feverishly to undermine the integrity of the CBI programme not minding how it has benefitted thousands of Dominicans across the island.
Skerrit said every Dominican would suffer if the CBI programme were to be scrapped. He pointed to the housing programme that has allowed thousands of people to have a resilient house of their own. Blackmoore used the opportunity to inform of a resettlement project coming to Campbell, and revealed that “over 100 persons from Mahaut constituency will move into new resilient homes” by April 2020.
On the island’s east coast in La Plaine, Skerrit issued commitment letters to 64 families with the promise that they will receive keys to their houses before the end of the year. He noted that the DLP government continues to change the lives of people for good by providing them permanent housing across the country.
“These lives were changed for the better – and changed forever,” he said. “Today, ordinary people in La Plaine all woke up with a sense of pride and achievement, and an even greater determination to face the future – understanding and appreciating that their country has rightfully invested in their well-being.”
The prime minister and finance minister disclosed that rather than for the UWP to commend the administration for changing the lives of Dominicans, they are busy planning campaigns of calumny. He referred to the situation where the opposition accused the government of stealing $1.2 billion instead of seeing where the money has been spent.
“They have 70 people throughout the length and breadth of this country, asking questions for answers they can find if they want to,” Skerrit disclosed. “Well, we have 70,000 people who can testify about what this government has done in their name.”
He further blamed the opposition for inciting citizens to civil disobedience and even engaging children to carry out destruction of lives and property. “Everything that is done that is good for you, they are criticizing it…they come here to recruit our children to engage in civil disobedience and destruction.”
He condemned the UWP for being envious of how much the DLP has done for Dominicans, and also rebuked previous administrations for failing to provide assistance to the people when disasters struck. He recounted that his administration has constructed homes for people free of charge, provided fishing boats to fishermen, created jobs for youths, issued scholarships for poor students and done everything to touch the lives of Dominicans everywhere.
