As 400 students graduated from the Dominica State College (DSC), the president of the institution, Dr. Donald Peters, said he will be retiring very soon. Peters said that this is the last graduation he will conduct after 12 years in the institution, and that a new leader will be taking over from him in the next few months.
The valedictorian at the DSC’s 20th Commencement Ceremony was Shawnalee Gordon, a triple major student who graduated with First Class honors. Gordon also won a programme awards in Business Administration and Mathematics. In her speech, the valedictorian urged her fellow graduands to remain strong and resilient even if their plans do not materialize in due time.
In praising the students for their success, outgoing DSC President Peters said the 400 graduands were the largest the school would graduate at a single event. He hailed the graduates for their resilience and brilliance, saying he was certain they will all succeed in their future endeavours. He expressed his assurance that given the abilities of the students to overcome the challenges of Hurricane Maria and COVID-19, they will succeed in anything they lay their hands upon.
Notable personalities at the graduation ceremony were Dominica’s President Charles Savarin, Minister of Health Irving McIntyre – representing Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit, Education Minister Octavia Alfred, and the senior engineer of Climate Resilience Execution Agency of Dominica (CREAD), Dr. Genora Joseph, who was the guest speaker.
