Lawmakers passed a bill to decriminalize possessing up to 28 grams of cannabis in 2020, and the Amendment to the Drugs Prevention of Misuse Act was passed in October of that same year. Dominicans above the age of 18 will be permitted to handle cannabis within given restrictions; according to Skerrit, key players within the cannabis industry will be granted legal permits and licenses to produce marijuana oil, creams, and soaps as captured in the 2022-2023 budget.

I believe [that] come next year, we will certainly be in a position to pass this legislation and have a full-fledged cannabis (marijuana) industry in Dominica so that we can take advantage of numerous opportunities where cannabis is concerned. We recognize that there are many Dominican citizens who are suffering from cancer [and] who use marijuana oil to obtain relief, and there are many testimonies of it working.
