As From 2023, Dominicans Can Grow Three Plants of Cannabis and Own 28 Grams

As from next year, Dominicans will be able to grow three plants of cannabis in their residences and possess up to 28 grams (one ounce) of weed. PM Roosevelt Skerrit revealed recently that his administration is working on repositioning the country to cultivate and commercialize medical cannabis.

Lawmakers passed a bill to decriminalize possessing up to 28 grams of cannabis in 2020, and the Amendment to the Drugs Prevention of Misuse Act was passed in October of that same year. Dominicans above the age of 18 will be permitted to handle cannabis within given restrictions; according to Skerrit, key players within the cannabis industry will be granted legal permits and licenses to produce marijuana oil, creams, and soaps as captured in the 2022-2023 budget.

I believe [that] come next year, we will certainly be in a position to pass this legislation and have a full-fledged cannabis (marijuana) industry in Dominica so that we can take advantage of numerous opportunities where cannabis is concerned. We recognize that there are many Dominican citizens who are suffering from cancer [and] who use marijuana oil to obtain relief, and there are many testimonies of it working.

The prime minister further stated that the government will provide certification to farmers to grow marijuana in the country. He added that the Canadian government is helping with legislation draft to enable Dominica export medical cannabis. He said Canada is setting up a project to assist Dominica to succeed in its cannabis industry, and that the attorney-general of Dominica is heading the national committee established to oversee this initiative.
