Attorney General, Levi Peter Advises UWP to Rethink Electoral Victory
Levi Peter, attorney general in the last DLP administration, has advised the UWP opposition to have a rethink over their rejection of the last general election results. Peter said there is no use heading to the courts for a redress when the DLP won 18 out of the total 21 seats, with external observers testifying to the integrity of the voting process.
According to the Peter, it is better for the opposition to take up Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit on his words to work with the UWP to implement electoral reforms amidst other joint engagements. He said the opposition may only be justified to seek legal redress if the DLP administration fails to further the core interests of the UWP as promised.
The attorney general however condemned the recourse to slurs, innuendoes and allegations against government leaders as well as public organizations without sufficient proofs. He added that this is not going to work out in the overall interest of Dominica as a sovereign country. He further charged the opposition to accept the olive branch extended by the government since it is an opportunity that must not be lost.
“I would strongly urge that that be pursued, at least give them an opportunity and if that fails then maybe you would be more justified to take alternative measures,” Peter said. ”But in the current circumstance, accusations and allegations against individuals and organizations [that are] totally unsupported by any credible evidence are not in the best interest of Dominica.”
