Back to School Shuffle: A New School Year Dawns in Dominica
Students in Dominica are gearing up to return to school for the upcoming academic year, with Education Minister Octavia Alfred announcing the preparations during a recent press conference. The Minister revealed the schedule for reopening, including planning days for staff on September 4 and 5, followed by the anticipated return of students on Wednesday, September 6. Traditionally, these first few days allow for orientation and settling students into their routines.
In a notable change, Grandbay Primary School, previously operating in the afternoon shift at the Grandbay Secondary School, will transition to a morning schedule within its own premises. Alfred explained that this adjustment aims to create a more conducive learning environment. All necessary logistics have been put in place to accommodate this shift, ensuring students’ safety through extensive cleaning and preparations.
Thibaud Primary School will also see changes as it merges with Vieille Case Baroness Scotland Primary School. While Thibaud is the first primary school to open, measures are in place for a smooth transition. Alfred emphasized that the government had consulted with principals and teachers to ensure readiness for students to commence their classes in this new setting.
Alfred noted that such arrangements were not unprecedented, citing similar strategies during renovations at Wotten Waven and Delices, where students temporarily attended other schools.
For all other schools, Alfred assured that operations would proceed as usual. She also confirmed that the government’s social support programs were fully operational, ensuring that students would be well-prepared for the new academic year.
