Billy Doctrove Appointed Chairman of Dominica’s New National Sports Council
The Dominica Government has taken a significant step toward advancing sports in Dominica by establishing the National Sports Council. This move highlights the government’s dedication to developing local sports and creating opportunities for young athletes, following a policy decision outlined by Prime Minister Roosevelt Skerrit.
Announcing the decision, Senator Oscar George, Minister of State in the Ministry of Culture, Youth, Sports and Community Development, emphasized the government’s commitment to sports development. According to George, the formation of the National Sports Council was preceded by extensive consultations with key stakeholders in the sporting community, including athletes, coaches, and administrators. Additionally, a task force composed of experts provided valuable insights to shape the Council’s work plan.
Billy Doctrove, a former International Cricket umpire and President of the Dominica Olympic Committee, has been appointed the Sports Council’s inaugural Chairman. “Mr. Doctrove brings a wealth of knowledge and experience that we are all confident will benefit the Council, and we wish him well as Chairman,” George stated.
The National Sports Council will prioritize several critical areas, including an urgent review of existing sports legislation to modernize and align it with the latest developments in the sporting world. The Council will also lead the finalization of a comprehensive national sports policy. This policy will address various aspects of sports improvement, such as infrastructure, talent development, and community engagement.
George believes that the establishment of the National Sports Council marks a milestone in Dominica’s sporting landscape. By enhancing overall management and strategic planning, the Council aims to elevate sports participation, performance, and accessibility across the nation.
With the formation of the National Sports Council, Dominica aims to foster a robust sporting environment that nurtures young talent and supports the development of local sports infrastructure.
