Billy Doctrove Wins another Term as DOC President; Highlights His Objectives

Dr. Billy Doctrove has won another term as the president of the Dominica Olympic Committee (DOC). He scored 11 votes against Dr. Barry Casimir who snagged six votes. The election held at the Prevost Cinema on Thursday. Doctrove thanked his supporters and noted that this would be his last term as DOC president.

A former West Indies referee and FIFA coach, Doctrove was first elected DOC president in 2017 before winning his second term last week. Before contesting the election against Doctrove, Casimir was the DOC treasurer and also the president of the Dominica Kayaking and Canoeing Association.

As part of his new plans for his second tenure, Doctrove said he looks forward to building a track for athletes in Dominica. He said he has discussed the idea with PM Roosevelt Skerrit and that the government leader is favourably disposed to implementing the concept.

“I’ve spoken to the Prime Minister and I know that he is keen to look into the possibility, because without a track, our athletes will be at a disadvantage,” he said. “I would like to see in the very near future that the athletics track is put on the front burner.”

The DOC president also said he intends to explore more game opportunities for Dominican athletes to compete in regional and international tournaments. He said his administration will implement improved training sessions and hire personal caretakers to improve the medical healthcare of athletes. He urged new talents in the sporting sector to work hard to make the country proud.

He also tasked sports coaches to up their games to ensure athletes succeed at competitions. He noted that DOC made a huge investment to train coaches last term, and that coaches must apply technology and science to significantly boost their delivery. He said this is the only way that athletes can improve enough to win major competitions.

While Doctrove returned as the DOC president, DFA vice president Glen Etienne also returned as DOC vice president, while Fenella Wenham retained her position as general secretary. Netball association member Korlita Hamilton was newly elected as DOC assistant secretary, and DFA treasurer Dexter Ducreay came in as the new DOC treasurer.

Other elected committee members are Peter Rickeets (DABA president), Chester Leteng (member of the cycling association), and Woody Lawrence (former Olympian).
