Biography of Businessman Waddy Astaphan Launched In Fort Young
A 113-page book detailing the life and times of Waddy Astaphan has been launched in Fort Young Hotel. Written by Canada-based historian Irving Andre, the book covers the early life of Astaphan and how he grew a business empire that outlived him while employing hundreds of people, as well as his contributions to the development of Dominica via his philanthropic efforts.
Waddy Anthony Astaphan was born on October 10, 1923, in Suriname. His parents relocated to Dominica when he was 10 years old, and they settled down in Roseau, the capital city of Dominica. Young Waddy’s parents sold household necessities such as sugar, flour, rice, chocolate and other staples to local residents.
Waddy attended St. Mary’s Academy and later sat for his senior Cambridge Examination in 1940. He was an excellent student and distinguished himself academically and in sports. He decided not to pursue a career in medicine but joined the family business in 1941. The business grew into an empire and the family diversified into furniture production as well as exportation of bay oil, cocoa, and vanilla among other cash crops.
Astaphan collaborated with other well-meaning patriots to establish the Good and Accountable Government organization which assisted people in business and sports. Toward the end of his life, he became ill and eventually died in 2016 at the ripe age of 93.
“His legacy lives on with a thriving business which continues to employ hundreds of workers,” author Irving Andre revealed. “His thrift, his generosity, determination and dedication are qualities which will continue to resonate throughout the length and breadth of Dominica.”
One of Waddy’s children is Anthony Astaphan, a prominent lawyer who said he is lucky to have been fathered by the late business mogul and philanthropist.
