Blackmoore Says Troublemakers Will Be Dealt With Rapidly, Swiftly, Decisively

In view of the UWP rally slated for today – Wednesday, May 31st – the Minister for National Security, Rayburn Blackmoore, has warned that troublemakers will be dealt with rapidly, swiftly, and decisively. The minister said the UWP is spearheading the efforts of other opposition parties to play out the unfortunate events of February 7, 2017, and that the government will not allow this to happen.

Blackmoore said the plan of the UWP to hold a rally in Roseau to allegedly protest the delay in the implementation of electoral reforms is actually a ploy to foment trouble for innocent Dominican citizens. He said the opposition is trying to create an avenue to incite violence that will make the country ungovernable and that this is contrary to the rule of law.

They are calling for a huge meeting under the disguise and pretext of a stand for electoral reform carded for Wednesday 31st May.. Sadly though, listening to the promotion and directive, it’s a classic dress rehearsal of February 7, 2017. This is certainly creating some level of trepidation among law-abiding citizens.

The minister said people have the right to speak and to voice their concerns under the law, but no one has the right to threaten public order or to incite others to violence. He said the police authorities have been advised to deal swiftly and decisively with protesters disrupting the peace of the capital city of Rosea and the country in general. He added that the police force will also be reinforced to carry out their duties against disruptors of public peace.

While asking Dominicans to reject a culture of constant protests, Blackmoore said the DLP administration continues to pay salaries promptly, increased the wages of the beautification component of NEP by 66%, and is presently constructing an international airport and a geothermal plant despite the devastations of Hurricane Maria and the economic regressions of COVID-19 pandemic.

No government is perfect and no nation is perfect, but the fact that we continue to forge ahead, notwithstanding those extraordinary challenges that we confront speaks to very profound matters. Firstly, our collective will and action as a nation, and secondly the magnitude or the fortitude of the country’s leadership.

The scheduled rally is organized by the UWP to “reclaim Dominica.” According to UWP President, Lennox Linton, “May 31 is really about us, the country that belongs to all of us, the country we have lost control of, the people of Dominica. We are standing together for all political colours from all walks of life, from all areas of the country. We are standing together…to say enough is enough.”
