Caribbean Reparations: Topic for 12th Annual Dame Eugenia Charles Memorial Lecture
The University of the West Indies (UWI) Open Campus Dominica will host the Twelfth Annual Dame Eugenia Charles Memorial Lecture in collaboration with the Dominica Reparations Committee and the House of Nyabinghi.
This year, Dr. June Soomer, Secretary-General of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS), will present on the topic: “Upgrading to first-class: The role and contributions of Dominican women in the Caribbean Reparations Movement.”
At this lecture, Dr. Soomer will address the role and contributions of women in Dominica to the cause of freedom and the Reparations Movement, which is the fight for freedom, justice and the acknowledgement of the great crimes committed against the African and indigenous people and its lingering, concomitant injustices. She will argue that if we do not put the redress of the dehumanization of African and indigenous women at the heart of the movement, we will never get justice and reparations for all.
The Lecture Series is meant to reflect on the influence, ideas and life of Dame Eugenia Charles and link these with contemporary political, social and economic issues. Guests get the opportunity to listen to the speaker present for about 45 minutes. Following the presentation, they will be able to interact with the presenter to discuss the influence of the topic on Dominica and the Caribbean region.
This Lecture is free and open to the public. Members of the media are especially invited to attend this lecture.
