CCM Backs UWP to Proceed to Appeal Court after Their Loss at the High Court
The Concerned Citizens Movement (CCM) has come out to support the UWP after their loss at the High Court recently. The UWP has sworn to appeal their loss at the Court of Appeal and the CCM has backed the initiative, saying the opposition should have won the case if not for an informed judge.
Justice Raulston Glasgow had dismissed the 10 petitions brought against the ruling DLP government over their victory at the 2019 elections. The opposition had accused the government of bribery and corruption at the polls, and that there were gross irregularities at the 10 constituencies across the country.
The UWP wanted the court to annul the victory of the DLP and overturn the results of the election. The DLP argued that the election was free and fair, and ultimately the judge threw out the petitions for lack of merit.
UWP leader Lennox Linton said the opposition will appeal the decision of the High Court, CCM Treasurer John Blanchard and CCM executive member Zar Emmanuel agreed that that is the way to go. Linton said the opposition will never tire of tackling the government and fighting for true democracy for Dominicans.
We are not coming to the court asking for favors, we are asking the court to look at our laws, look at our rule of law, and adjudicate matters brought to it.
Lennox Linton: Leader of UWP
Linton also prayed UWP supporters within and outside the country to crowdfund in order to enable the opposition to prosecute its legal cases at the courts until government returns to the party. The UWP leader said contributing to a legal defence fund would keep the opposition operational and with the resources to fight democratic cases at the courts.
