Chief Cultural Officer Advocates for Integration of Creole in School Curriculum

Acting Chief Cultural Officer Earlson Matthew has expressed a strong commitment to enhancing the presence of Creole language and arts within the formal educational framework.

During his address at the 14th edition of the DBS Radio, Ministry of Education National Reading Competition at Berean Christian Academy, Matthew discussed the ongoing challenge of ensuring that Creole and the arts are recognized as extracurricular activities and as integral parts of the school curriculum.

Matthew pointed out that despite clear knowledge of what needs to be done and by whom, traditional arts and the Creole language often end up sidelined in the educational system. This, he argues, undermines their potential impact on cultural preservation and literacy. He advocates for a change to incorporate these elements more fully into the literary experiences offered in schools.

The recent National Schools’ Arts Festival in March, hosted by the cultural division, demonstrated the significant interest and talent among youth in traditional, cultural, and artistic expressions.

According to Matthew, the festival serves as both a showcase and a confirmation that young people are engaged and invested in their cultural heritage, supported by dedicated teachers and parents.

Matthew also extended his appreciation to community groups and individuals who have consistently supported and promoted cultural education. Their efforts, he noted, are crucial for inculcating a deep-seated appreciation of cultural traditions among young people, ensuring that these traditions are carried forward and shared across generations.

This initiative aims to enhance the cultural and intellectual development of Dominica’s youth by adopting inclusive educational practices that foster literacy and cultural appreciation.
