China Will Support Any Party That Wins Elections in Dominica

Former Chinese ambassador to Suriname and Chinese ambassador to Dominica said their country will continue to support Dominica regardless of whether the DLP, UWP or any other political party wins the general elections. H.E. Zhang Jinxiong, former ambassador to Suriname, said China will remain friends with Dominica not minding any party that is in power.

Both Chinese ambassadors were clarifying statements credited to Prime Minister Skerrit that China will no longer support Dominica if the DLP loses at the polls. Both Jinxiong and Lu Kun, the ambassador to Dominica, said this is not true because the People’s Republic of China will always respect the choices of the people over who emerges as winner at the elections.

“We always say we respect the choices of the people here,” Jinxiong said. “Elections are your internal affairs but between country to country relations, we are very happy to be friends with the government and people of Dominica.”

Kun added that China will never disparate between the government and peoples of Dominica. He said elections are a country’s internal business and no external country should interfere in the local affairs of their host country. He said China will remain friends with both the people and government of Dominica regardless of party affiliations. It will be recalled that Dominica and China developed diplomatic relations in 2004.

“Whether the Labour or UWP Party is in government, we would have good relations with both,” Ambassador Kun said.
