Chinese Company Awarded Construction of Dominica’s Int’l Airport At $1 Billion

The construction of Dominica’s international airport has been awarded to a Chinese company – China Railway No. 5 Engineering Group Company Ltd (CR5). The airport developer and consultant, MMC Development Ltd. put out bid for the construction and several international airport contractors submitted their bids.

MMC Development founder and CEO Anthony Haiden said CR5 was awarded the contract to execute the design, construction, supply, completion, testing, and commissioning of the airport. Haiden said that after a prolonged selection process, CR5 emerged as the best bidder. He said the Chinese company is certain to complete the international airport within the specified period.

Haiden also said MMC Development will ensure the international airport is resilient and sustainable for centuries to come. Occupying 500 acres of land between Woodford Hill and Wesley communities, the airport will have a 2850-meter runway, terminal building, ATCT tower, general aviation hangar, fuel farm, aircraft rescue and firefighting facility (ARFF), central sub-station, cargo bay, and a waste disposal/treatment plant.

The airport development is designed to accommodate up to 750,000 passengers yearly. It can also accommodate wide-bodied aircraft such as Airbus A350 and Boeing 777-200ER on direct routes to North America, Europe, and Asia. The management of CR5 expressed joy at being awarded the airport construction out of many global bidders, and added that this is the first contract they would win overseas.

“The Dominica International Airport project is our first overseas design and construction general contracting spot project,” CR5 management stated. “It is also the first airport project covering the flight area, terminal area, supporting construction in front of the station, procurement and installation of communication equipment and other engineering categories.”
