Chinese Government Offers University Scholarship to 12 Dominica Students

The Chinese government has awarded scholarships to 12 Dominican students to study in the top 10 universities in China. The award was announced by the Chinese ambassador to Dominica, Lu Kun, on Wednesday, August 12, 2019 at the Fort Young Hotel in Roseau. More than 150 students have received scholarships to study in China since the Asian country and Dominica established bilateral relationships in 2004.

Eight of the 12 students will be pursuing their Bachelors degrees and four will be going for their Masters degrees. Representing the Minister for Education, the Minister for Ecclesiastical Affairs, Family and Gender Affairs, Catherine Daniel, said the main areas of study for the 12 students are core industries relevant to Dominica’s development.

The students will be studying Computer Science, Information and System Management, Business Administration, Aquaculture, Electrical Engineering, Social Work, Medicine, and International Relations.

The 12 students are –

  • Terrick King
  • Charlton McClean
  • Alwinar Thomas
  • Tamia Webster

  • Tricia Sandrine Lewis
  • Nita Pascal

  • Chevon Ambo

The full scholarships for the twelve students will cover tuition, lodging, comprehensive medical insurance, and living allowance.

Ambassador Lu Kun urged the students to be strong and passionate about their courses of study when they arrive in China, adding that they will find friendly people all around them.

“Don’t be afraid to make friends,” Ambassador Kun said. “It will be an entirely new experience in your life, a new adventure…but don’t be afraid. You are not alone. There are friendly Chinese teachers and classmates.”

Dominican President Charles Savarin and his wife were at the programme, including the Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Education and Human Resource Development, and several other senior officials in government.
