Two members of the Moun Sewye group, Davidson Julien and Kashma Buju Richards, have reportedly been arrested by the police. The two men were allegedly arrested at the Newtown Fisheries Complex on Tuesday in a manner that was excessively forceful to eyewitnesses.
Julien is an architect and cousin to Richards who is a social activist and entrepreneur. Eyewitnesses said the police roughhandled Julien when he demanded on knowing the reasons for Richards’ arrest. The arresting officers allegedly punched Richards on the face and left him with a broken nose before taking them both away.
Moun Sewye executive member and social activist Dustan Maggie Peters and several other people reportedly besieged the police station with placards to demand for the release of both men. Peters said the police would not agree for a doctor to see Richards, and that they promised to provide him with a physician if the need should arise.
Fellow Moun Sewye executive and activist Tyron Nicholas was also on hand to apply pressure on the police before Julien was subsequently released after 48 hours in custody. Richards remain detained and his group continues to press for either his unconditional release or arraignment in court.
Police authorities have not volunteered any information on the reasons for the men’s arrest, but this is a developing story and it will be updated as new development unfolds.
