Council on Ageing to Provide Lifetime Insurance Coverage for Senior Citizens
The Dominica Council on Ageing (DCOA) has perfected plans to provide insurance coverage for senior citizens who are members of the organization. DCA executive member, Sherita Gregoire, said the council collaborated with Sagicor insurance company to provide insurance coverage for council members till their individual deaths. She said the coverage will launch on September 19, 2022.
This insurance initiative is probably in furtherance of DCOA’s “Month of the Elderly” month-long celebration of senior citizens which starts from September 1 to October 1, 2022. DCOA President Ophelia Marie revealed that the theme of the month-long celebration is “Building Our Resilience” and that it will draw attention to the plights of the elderly in the country.
She said the programme will highlight how senior citizens can access government initiatives for improved standards of living, enhanced medical care, assured pension payment, freedom from domestic abuse, and other end-of-life social benefits. She also noted that various programmes have been shortlisted to celebrate the elderly in the month of September to make them understand that they still matter in the society.
Meanwhile, the Acting Director of Primary Healthcare, Dr. Lynora Fevrier-Drigo, said the government will be intensifying its efforts to make primary healthcare accessible to all Dominicans. She noted that the renewed initiative will focus on community outreach and that special teams will visit people in rural and urban areas to educate them on various health offerings.
Fevrier-Drigo said some of the health initiatives to be explored include drug and alcoholism, obesity in children, diabetes, hypertension, and other health concerns among Dominicans of all levels.
