Court Summons: Danny Lugay Says No One Can Intimidate Him from Walking

Following a court summons he received to answer charges for participating in the weekly walks organized by Atherton Martin, Roseau North MP Danny Lugay has revealed that no one can prevent him from walking the streets of the nation’s capital. Police authorities had issued a summons for Lugay to appear at the magistrate court for participating in a public walk without express approval from the chief of police.

While the matter is scheduled for May 19 at the magistrate court in Roseau, Lugay said he will not be intimidated since it is not against the laws of the land to walk. He is ably supported by social activist Atherton Martin who organized the public walks about two months ago. Martin said the purpose of the weekly peaceful walk is to draw public attention to political misgovernance, economic corruption, abuse of natural resources, youth unemployment, and widespread poverty in Dominica.

Although police authorities had notified Martin that he is due in court at a latter date for organizing the street walks without government approval, the environmentalist said he does not require official permission before walking the streets; and nor does any laws in the country forbid peace walks for social causes.

Martin also went ahead to invide the Chief of Police, Daniel Carbon, to relate more with the community he serves by encouraging communal interactions. He expressed agreement that Carbon is a huge advocate for community policing, and that the organized peaceful walks will also promote police interests across the country.

Meanwhile, Lugay said the authorities should be ready to serve him more court summons since he is not ready to cease walking in the public interest. He said his conscience is clear and that the God he serves will vindicate him for participating in progressive activities to usher in a New Dominica. He maintained that it is his fundamental human rights to walk and that he is not breaking any law by walking along the streets.
