Creole Language Dictionary Coming; and Creole to Be Introduced to Schools

Creole language is undergoing a revival across the country with the introduction of the language in schools by the third term of this school year and the launching of a Creole dictionary at a time to come. Education Minister Octavia Alfred announced that “A 5-Minute Pause for a Creole Cause” will kick off across schools this year to boost the use of the language as an academic subject in schools.

The proposed introduction of Creole language to schools and the coming launch of a Creole dictionary is a fallout of the recently concluded Creole Symposium organized by Leroy Charles of Creole Heartbeat Magazine. The symposium held with collaboration with UWI Open Campus, the National Youth Council, and the Ministry of Education.

Charles said he was working for the development and national adoption of Creole language with late Felix Henderson before the latter passed away. He said he is elated that the government has approved the use and learning of Creole language in schools. As part of the government’s effort to boosting the use of the language, Chief Cultural Officer Raymond Lawrence said the proposed Creole dictionary will be available shortly to members of the public.

Minister Alfred said schools will be notified of the need for Creole subject with a 2-page guide that outlines the coverage of the subject and related activities by the end of the school term.
