DCSLL Gives Scholarship to 20 Students; Lennox Linton Criticizes the Process

The Dominica Cooperative Societies League (DCSLL) has awarded scholarships to 20 students. The scholarship will relieve parents of funding the secondary school education of their children; and provide indigent students with the opportunity to advance in their academic pursuits. The new academic session starts in September, 2022.

DCSLL President, Laurina Telemacque, said education is crucial for social mobility and that the scholarship will enable the dreams of the assisted students to come true. She expressed joy that DCSLL is able to assist students and parents in the pursuit of quality education, and that the gesture will ultimately translate to national growth and development in the near future. She tasked other organizations within the country to rise up to help Dominican youths to achieve their educational pursuits.

Meanwhile, Opposition Leader Lennox Linton has criticized the government and some select philanthropic organizations for their selective scholarships. He said it is unfruitful that scholarships are given to select individuals while the majority of others are neglected. He noted that despite the eligibility criteria applied to awarding the scholarships, the process of selection and the agenda behind the funding bespeak political preference and affiliation.

According to Linton, the sources of scholarship funding belong to all Dominicans, and all students should benefit from such gestures. He noted the growing discontent among parents and students who were sidetracked during the selection process, saying it is not democratic enough and that it does not set an emulative precedence for the coming generation. He reiterated that school supplies and critical funding assistance should be made available to every citizen without preference or favour.
