DCSLL Grants Scholarship and Bursaries to 19 Students to Attend Secondary School

The Dominica Cooperative Societies League Limited (DCSLL) granted scholarship and bursaries to 19 students to attend secondary school. Last year, the cooperative gave six bursary awards, but this was raised to 17 this year. The presentation ceremony held at the Prevost Cinemall where each bursary recipient was to receive the one-time allowance of $250.

“For these scholarships, the League has committed to the following payment of all school fees, the provision of books and stationary, a uniform allowance of $250 in the 1st and 3rd years, all examination fees and a commuter allowance if the student resides outside a 1 mile radius from the secondary school of attendance,” said DSCLL President Josephine Dublin.

The cooperative currently sponsors the scholarship programmes of 10 students at secondary schools in the country. According to Dublin, this is possible because cooperative members were able to contribute funds that enabled the credit union to carry out its sponsorship mandates. She tasked members to give more, and also tasked awardees to face their studies with a view to making the cooperative and their parents proud.

DCSLL General Manager Phoenix Belfield said the cooperative understands that youths are the future of the country. To this end, the credit union movement invests in their education through scholarships and bursaries to help them achieve the topmost in education development.

“It is really an investment,” Belfield said. “Why I said it’s an investment is because, the reason that we, as a movement, are here for 60 plus years is because our founders took the time to invest in us; and because they have invested in us, we see the need to continue with that investment so that the credit union movement, the cooperative movement by extension, continues to progress.”
