DDA and IOM Partner on Workshop: Protecting visitors to Dominica in Times of Crisis
Discover Dominica Authority (DDA) partners with the International Organization for Migration (IOM) to hold a two-day workshop on “Protecting visitors to Dominica in times of crisis”. The workshop, carded for April 28 & 29, will take place at the Prevo Cinemall, Ballroom Conference Room in Roseau. Key tourism stakeholders representing various sectors will present case studies on experiences when the safety of visitors was compromised, with a view to identify and document best practices, gaps, and actions to bridge these gaps. IOM will provide support using its Migrants in Communities in Crisis (MICIC) guidelines for anticipating, preparing for, and responding to the needs of visitors in times of crisis. The organizers expect that the participation of stakeholders from public sector, private sector, representatives of relevant subcommittees of the National Emergency Planning Organization (NEPO), and Consular Officers and Honorary Consuls will ensure rich results.
Director of Tourism, Mr. Colin Piper notes, “This workshop is indeed timely as we have had to deal with two major disasters which have had a huge impact on tourism in the last three years. Given the current situation with the volcanic eruption in our sister country St. Vincent and the Grenadines, it is imperative that we adequately prepare to respond appropriately to whatever natural or other disaster we may face.”
IOM Communications Assistant, Maxine Alleyne-Esprit expressed that IOM is grateful for the opportunity to support the tourism sector to be better prepared to provide for the safety of visitors on island during an emergency. The workshop will use the MICIC guidelines to strengthen the Tourism Disaster Plan and build the capacity of the government of Dominica to respond appropriately and ensure the safe, orderly and regular movement of visitors in the context of disasters.
