DDA’s CEO Says Embracing Creole Identity is the Only Way to Grow Tourism
Discover Dominica Authority CEO said embracing the Creole identity is the only way to grow the tourism industry in the country. Colin Piper is the CEO of Discover Dominica Authority (DDA) and also the director of tourism. He revealed at a recent news conference that the only way for Dominica to become a wealthy tourism nation is for everyone to embrace their Creole identity.
Given that the country just commemorated the second anniversary of Hurricane Maria and celebrated the rebuilding efforts that have taken place across the country, Piper said the tourism sector must begin to “make very good use of the attributes of our Creole cultural heritage” for global relevance.
Piper said DDA will be integrating distinctive elements of the Creole culture into marketing efforts initiated by the tourism sector so as to “attract new visitors and to reconnect with those who have long supported our industry.”
To this end, he said it is advisable for people to use more of the Creole language and utilize local music and rhythms in any activity that will promote the country’s national values and image.
“We must also consider the use of our local cuisine, local crafts and designs made by our talented artists,” Piper added, saying everyone must begin to consume locally produced food to build tourism of agriculture.
The Tourism Minister, Senator Robert Tonge urged all Dominicans to put the country first in all they think and do, adding this is the only way to make the country great again.
“Let us put Dominica first, let us celebrate our achievement as a nation,” Tonge said. “Lets us all participate in the various activities for this year’s celebrations.”
