DDA to Showcase Dominica’s Tourism Potentials at T20 Cricket Tournament

Officials of the Discover Dominica Authority (DDA) and the Ministry of Tourism revealed they will be showcasing the tourism glory of Dominica at the T20 cricket tournament between the West Indies and Bangladesh on July 2-3. The international cricket games will hold at the newly renovated Windsor Park Sports Stadium and all Dominicans have been urged to troop to the stadium to watch the games.

DDA spokesperson, Kimberly King, said the government will use the occasion of the tournament to project the tourism potential of Dominica to the entire world. She said people will be able to see the cultural and tourism attributes of the Nature Isle through their TV screens as the tournament progresses. She said people will also be able to understand the history of Dominica – from the first settlers, the Kalinago, and the arrival of African slaves.

From inception, we have consistently maintained the key message of experiencing the culture and excitement with Dominica for T-20 cricket. The viewing public through coordinated advertisements between DDA and the Cricket West Indies can expect to see the broadcast of destination videos highlighting the island’s key attributes and unique culture.

She added that cultural dancers will demonstrate the traditional Bele and Jing-ping dances of the Dominican peoples; and spectators will be treated to Lapo Kabwit rhythms from performers in Sensay costumes. The DDA official also said TV viewers and stadium spectators will also enjoy quality Bouyon music presented in a carnival style to the delight of everyone.

The last time an international cricket event held in Dominica was in 2017 – before the devastation of Hurricane Maria.

Already, players from the Bangladesh and the West Indies teams have begun to arrive in Dominica. Some of the lineup for West Indies include Nicholas Pooran (Captain), Rovman Powell (Vice Captain), Shamarh Brooks, Akeal Hosein, Alzarri Joseph, Brandon King, Kyle Mayers, Obed McCoy, Keemo Paul, Romario Shepherd, Odean Smith, Devon Thomas, and Hayden Walsh Jr among others.
