Delices Village Leads Dominica’s Vibrant Celebration of World Rivers Day 2023
Dominica recently united in a heartfelt celebration of World Rivers Day, paying tribute to these life-giving waterways. The event commenced with a solemn church service at the serene Laroche Catholic Church on Sunday, September 24, marking the 18th Anniversary of this global observance.
Themed “A Healthy Environment with Healthy Rivers Create Healthy Nations,” this year’s commemoration was impeccably coordinated by the Delices Upliftment Committee, joining forces with the Delices Village Council, the World Rivers Day Committee, the Forestry Division, and the Parliamentary Representative.
The day began with a poignant church service at the Laroche Catholic Church grounds at 10:00 a.m., followed by a delectable ‘Everything Breadfruit’ brunch. This worldwide celebration, held every fourth Sunday in September, offered a glimpse of the breathtaking beauty of the white river, L’Riviere Blanc.
An official ceremony followed the church service, commencing at 1:00 p.m. The highlight of this event was the well-deserved recognition of Mr. Moses James, a local herbalist from Delices, lauded for his lifelong commitment to preserving the river and advocating for the protection of the Victoria Falls.
The event also featured an exhibition showcasing Delices’ local products, proudly displaying the rich culture and produce of the region.
As part of the week-long festivities, a Coastal Clean-up and sign installation took place on Saturday, September 23, with the signage generously donated by Fine Foods Inc.
World Rivers Day is an annual event dedicated to celebrating the multifaceted importance of rivers and raising public awareness about their significance. It serves as a global reminder to enhance our stewardship of these vital water bodies, echoing Dominica’s commitment to preserving its natural treasures.
