DFA Launches Drive to Recruit More Female Footballers for Sports Clubs

The Dominica Football Association (DFA) has launched a new drive to recruit more female footballers and create more female football clubs across the country. The DFA started by launching the “Growing Women Football” initiative to recruit females that are above the age of 15 for football training. These female footballers will be coached by special coaches appointed by the DFA.

DFA technical director, Jerome Bardouille, said the sports association is not only intent at recruiting and establishing female football clubs, but also at getting female sports administrators and directors at the apex level. He noted that the country has a female football team at the senior level, but there is no such parallel team at the junior level.

He also noted that there are not many female coaches in the country and that male dominance is not helping women to reach their sports potentials in the country. According to him, there is no way the sports industry can be fully structured without a corresponding junior and senior female football players, female sports teams, female coaches, and female game administrators.

Starting at the grassroots level, the DFA has begun to set up sports training and coaching for women in partnership with the Ministry of Education and Sports.

To date, we see an aggressive move that is unprecedented and one that has alerted our populace that women have their part to play in maintaining football as the number one spot on our beautiful island Dominica. This present administration has allowed a record level of investments to women football projects, and hopefully in the near future looking to introduce new leagues and competition as more funds are injected into our games.

Glenn Ettiene, President of The Dominica Football Association (DFA)

Ettiene stated that the DFA is dedicated to scouting for and recruiting women footballers this year, and that dedicated women sports teams will be attended to next year. He said this will bridge the gap between male and female players and ultimately upgrade the quality and diversity of sports in Dominica.
