The Dominica Football Association (DFA) has signed a EC$119,000 sports injury insurance policy with Nagico Insurance. The sports injury insurance policy will protect players on the field and on training grounds from injury-related expenses within and outside the country. Under the policy, players will be covered when they are playing within the country and when they play for the country abroad.
DFA President Glen Etienne presented a cheque of EC$69,973 to Heston Charles of Nagico Insurance as partial premium for the insurance policy. Etienne said the sports injury insurance policy is a further commitment of the DFA to the welfare of players and the upliftment of sporting standards in Dominica. He said the welfare of players, sports clubs, and sports fans remains the primary concern of the DFA, and that the insurance coverage is a further testament to that commitment.
“Football is a contact sport and we have seen many injuries sustained through the game…with the aggression and hard work encouraged, there is no doubt that we run the risk of serious injuries on our players,” he said. “We are aware of the cost associated to assist our injured players. Hence, we have always supported players who got injured during the game and also those who have represented the country.”
The DFA president stated that players injured during training sessions or gaming competitions will no longer have to beg to procure funds for medical treatments. He said the policy will take care of that, and that this initiative will release clubs from the financial burden of caring for injured players. He said players must play within a safe and secure environment to be motivated to give their utmost skills to the game.
Etienne said sport is a driver of national development and regional integration, and that the DFA will commit to upgrading sporting activities in Dominica.
